Pop Up Book of Munich

By Jill Dawson

I created this piece after taking Helen Friel’s online course, “Pop Up Fundamentals: Story Telling with Paper and Light.” My book invites a viewer to explore three of my favorite places in the city of Münich, Germany — the Frauenkirche, Chinese Tower Beer Garden, and one of Oktoberfest’s most beautiful beer tents. Created in all white, my pop up pages may be illuminated in a variety of ways: by positioning a natural light source behind the pop ups, moving a cellphone flashlight under and behind the pop-ups, or by turning on a switch to light up integrated LEDs. I designed the pages in InkScape and cut them out with a Cricut.

Behind the Scenes

Munich Pop Up Book Circuit
The back of the pop up pages reveal part of the circuit, connecting the pages to a battery holder, hidden in a pocket on the book’s front page.
Munich Pop Up Book Battery Pouch
The battery holder contains 2 X 3V batteries. The wires (hidden by the pocket) connect to the circuitry on the backs of the pop up pages.
