Hi Folks! Kelly Griglione here to share the cutest polar bear skiing cross-country across the Arctic landscape … under a crisp, clear winter sky.
This bear is from the Winnie & Walter Winter Wishes with Evelin T Designs stamp set. After coloring the bear I cut two snow drifts for him to ski in between. The snow drift in the foreground is just adhered on the bottom so he can slide freely between the two layers. The stars and the die cuts are from the same Winter Wishes set as well. After die cutting the star shape I backed the panel with dark blue vellum (so it blends in with the panel) and stamped/embossed a silver star in the opening. This will be what lights up.
Here is a look into the inside of the card. I made a pencil mark where the center of each of the stars will be and then ran the copper tape past the pencil marks, and adhered the Chibitronics white LEDs on top of the pencil marks. The second star from the left was a little off (I either didn’t see the pencil mark well, or I marked it in the wrong place) so I had to shift and angle the LED over to the right a little. Not a big deal, as the circuitry still works, but for something like this it’s important to catch it before you get too far in building your card. So I always test it out along the way, by holding the top panel over the lighted LEDs.
Here’s a look at the back of the top panel, showing the blue vellum adhered behind the star die cuts, and the sliding switch wrapped in copper tape. You can also see the black foam tape I’ve added to the bottom panel.
Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way, shall we see what he looks like?!
Ta-da! I love the fact that you need to pull him forward to get the stars to “turn on,” which is consistent with the motion he’d be making as he’s cross-country skiing. I find that it’s important to be as close to real life as you can get with these things (says the person showing you a card featuring a polar bear skiing, hahaha!)
I’ve mounted his starry night panel on a map of the Arctic to further play along with his story, but the panel is also able to operate on its own, so I may also use him as a journaling card for my December Daily album. I’d really love to have some interactive elements in an album like that to surprise people.
Here he is again, skiing at dusk with the thin outline of the stars shining in silver.
And here he is when night has completely descended, with the stars glowing.
Check it out in the video below!
I hope you’ve enjoyed this cute bear on his skiing expedition across the Artic! Thanks so much for stopping by! You can get further details at my blog Notable Nest.
